HCG, or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, is a bioidentical human hormone that is naturally found in trace amounts in humans all the time but is made in large amounts during pregnancy. Experience has shown that doing daily injections of very small amounts (around 150 iu) of this hormone has an appetite suppressant effect and helps people to stick to a low-calorie diet for weight loss. Since it is a natural human hormone, it does not have many of the toxic effects that most weight loss drugs have.

At this time, HCG is not FDA-approved for weight loss. It is FDA-approved at higher doses (around 5000 units per day) for infertility treatments. The package insert for HCG specifically states that HCG does not selectively induce loss of abnormal fat stores or help weight loss in any way beyond what a regular low-calorie diet would do. However, the experience of thousands of patients over many years shows that this diet can be very effective. No diet works for everyone, and the hormone itself will not induce weight loss without rigidly following the diet plan, which is low calorie, low carb, low fat and includes intermittent fasting. The appetite suppression that is commonly seen with the HCG is what makes it possible for most people to stick to this rapid weight loss program.

Patients on the HCG diet at Optimal Health Spectrums are given a booklet written by Dr. Mielke that fully explains the details of how to follow the weight loss plan and answers all common questions. Patients can lose up to a pound per day on the HCG Diet, but of course, results will vary. The diet usually is for 4-8 weeks at a time but can be repeated if needed for further weight loss. Most patients are happy with their results, and it helps people to get on a healthier eating plan that can help them to maintain their weight loss long-term.
